China organises “Shared Destiny-2021” – a Joint Military exercise with Pakistan, Mongolia & Thailand

The 1st ever joint Military exercise – “Shared Destiny-2021” to be held between China, Pakistan, Mongolia & Thailand from September 6 to 15 at China’s Henan’s Queshan county. The military exercise that is organised by China will work on multinational peacekeeping live exercises, in line with the United Nations – “Action for Peacekeeping”.

India, Moroccan Navies Conducted 1st Maritime Partnership Exercise; INS Tabar reaches Egypt’s Alexandria

The Indian Navy has conducted the 1st ever Maritime Partnership Exercise with the Moroccan Navy.

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, the 3rd Warship of the Talwar class frigate built for the Indian Navy in Russia, participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise with Royal Moroccan Navy ship ‘Lieutenant Colonel Arrahman’ off Casablanca port as a part of its ongoing 4-month deployment (June to September 2021) across Europe & Africa. INS Tabar has reached Alexandria harbour in Egypt. Navy ships that have visited Alexandria for Exercise Bright Star with Egypt are also present for the reception of INS Tabar.

‘Exercise Bright Star 2021’: Egypt Army hosted the joint military exercise ‘Bright Star 2021’, the largest multinational military training in the Middle East.

Indian Army participates in ‘International Army Games – 2021’ hosted by Russia; India announces Defence Procurement from Russia

The 7th edition of the International Army Games 2021 that was held between 22nd August and 4th September saw the participation of the Indian Army. A 101-member contingent was sent by the Indian army to participate in various army games that were hosted by Russia.

Participating events – Army Scout Masters Competition (ASMC), Elbrus ring, polar star, sniper frontier and safe route games.
i.India finalised deal with Russia for the purchase of around 70,000 AK-203 assault rifles to replace the existing Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) 5.56mm*45mm assault rifle.
ii.United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia confirmed that the delivery of first Krivak or Talwar Class stealth frigate(War Ship) out two to India by the mid of 2023 due to delay caused by the pandemic.

Overview of EAM Jaishankar’s Visit to Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark

India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Subrahmanyam Jaishankar paid a visit to Slovenia (2-3rd September 2021), Croatia (3 September 2021) and Denmark (4-5 September 2021) to review the bilateral relationship and strengthen India’s cooperation with the 3 European countries.

PM Addressed the 6th EEF; Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Participated in EEF; OVL, IOC Signed MoU with Russia’s Gazprom

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually addressed the plenary session of the 6th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) i.e. the 2021 edition of EEF, which was held in Vladivostok, Russia. The PM stressed the importance of greater economic and commercial engagement between the two nations in line with the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’. Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri led the Indian delegation of Indian oil and gas companies to have a 5-day visit to Russia from September 1 to 5, 2021. Under the visit, he attended the 6th EEF in Vladivostok, Russia. ONGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), and the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) with Russia’s Gazprom for cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector. The MoU was signed at the 6th EEF.

GSITI, Hyderabad Launched Website to Offer Earth Science Courses

The Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), Hyderabad, launched its 24×7 Website to offer round the clock accessibility to various online courses on earth sciences to its stakeholders. This is in line with the Digital India Campaign of the Government of India. The beta version of the website is designed to cater to the training needs of the geoscience fraternity. The site hosts more than 33 recorded training courses and awards completion certificates.

ECI organises 2-day SVEEP Consultation Workshop

In August 2021, the Election Commission of India (ECI) organised a 2-day long SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) Consultation Workshop to plan voter & booth centric strategies and also to guide new voters on ethical voting. Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, participated in the event that reviewed State SVEEP Plans and conducted comprehensive strategies for the upcoming elections.

Tripartite Karbi Anglong Agreement inked between Union & Assam State Govt with KAAC

i.In order to foster peace and prosperity in Assam, on September 4, 2021, the Central Government has signed a tripartite Karbi Anglong Agreement/Memorandum of Settlement under which all conditions of the Karbi people will be fulfilled in a stipulated time.
ii.Karbis are major ethnic community of Assam.
iii.It was signed between the Central Government, Assam Government, and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in the presence of Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA); Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Shipping and Waterways; Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma; and Chief Executive Member of KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang, among other representitives in New Delhi.
iv.As a part of agreement, there will be investment of Rs 1,000 crore by the Union and Assam government for development of the Karbi Anglong area in the next 5 years

28th Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘SIMBEX’ 2021 held in South China Sea

i.The 3 days 28th Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘SIMBEX-2021’ was held between the Indian Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in the southern edge of the South China Sea. It was hosted by RSN as ‘at sea only’ i.e. without any physical interactions due to COVID-19.
ii.The India Navy was represented by the following: Guided Missile Destroyer INS (Indian Naval Ship) Ranvijay with a ship borne helicopter, ASW (Anti-submarine warfare) Corvette INS Kiltan Guided Missile Corvette INS Kora, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

ADB approves $150 million loan for urban housing project in Tamil Nadu

Urban Housing Project in Tamil Nadu: Multilateral funding agency Asian Development Bank (ADB) on September 3, 2021, approved a $150 million (approximately Rs 1,095 crores) loan for a sustainable housing project for the urban poor in Tamil Nadu. ADB in a release stated that the aim of the loan is to provide access to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable housing for the urban poor in Tamil Nadu. The agency highlighted that Tamil Nadu is vital to India’s economic growth, which is currently contributing 8.54 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The economic opportunities have boosted the rural-urban migration rate in Tamil Nadu which already has one of the highest urbanization rates in India. Ricardo Carlos Barba, ADB Principal Safeguards Specialist for South Asia said that the housing shortfall in Tamil Nadu accounts for 6.66 per cent of the national deficit, and when mapped against income level, low-income households bear most of the shortage.

ADB Provides USD 150 million Loan for Urban Housing Projects in Tamil Nadu

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 150 million loan for building sustainable housing projects for Urban Poor in Tamil Nadu. From this loan the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) will construct houses in 9 different locations.

Objective- To provide safe, affordable housing infrastructure and services to vulnerable sections.

TNSCB will construct houses and relocate about 6000 households vulnerable to natural hazards to safer locations. The Directorate of Town and Country Planning of Tamil Nadu will make plans to map the economic and infrastructure development. The ADB is providing assistance to the USD 1.5 million Technical Assistance(TA) grant from its Technical Assistant Special Fund. It will enhance capacity building of government agencies. The technical assistance programmes like graduation programmes for vulnerable relocated beneficiaries etc.

Suhas Yathiraj: 1st IAS officer to win Paralympics medal

Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj, current district magistrate of Noida, has become the first IAS officer to win Paralympics medal. Key Points He ended his campaign with the winning of historic silver. He lost gold to top seed Lucas Mazur of France in the men’s singles SL4 class final at the Tokyo Paralympics on September 5.

Max Verstappen wins F1 Dutch Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing Honda’s Max Verstappen (23 years) from the Netherlands won the 2021 Formula 1(F1) Heineken Dutch Grand Prix held at the Circuit Zandvoort in the dunes north of Zandvoort, the Netherlands from 3rd to 5th September 2021. This victory also marks his 7th win of the season and the 17th win of his career.
The 2021 F1 Dutch Grand Prix was organised by Dutch Grand Prix(DGP).
F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton (United Kingdom(UK)) and Valtteri Bottas(Finland) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Dutch Grand Prix was held after 36 years & Max Verstappen was its 1st winner. The last Dutch GP was held in 1985. With this victory, Max Verstappen gained 3 points ahead of the defending world champion Lewis Hamilton who finished the race in 2nd. The F1 Championships are organised by Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

i.Max Verstappen is a Belgian-Dutch F1 racing driver with Red Bull Racing (competing as Red Bull Racing Honda) – F1 teams owned by Red Bull, a beverage company.

Prashant Kumar, President of Bar Association of India, Elected to the Board of ILAC

Prashant Kumar the president of the Bar Association of India has been unanimously elected to the board of directors of the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC), with effect from 2nd September 2021. He became the 2nd Asian to serve on the board of directors of ILAC. ILAC is a Sweden based international non-governmental organisation dedicated to strengthening the rule of law, empowering legal professionals, and ensuring equal access to justice.

Olympic Medalist Lovlina Borgohain named Brand Ambassador of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan in Assam

On the occasion of 60th Teacher’s Day The State Education Minister of Assam, Ranoj Pegu appointed Olympian Lovlina Borgohain as the brand ambassador of the Samagra Sikhsha Abhiyan(SSA) in the state of Assam.
Highlights: The state department presented Anundoram Baruah Award 2018 to Professor(Late) Taburam Taid. In order to increase digital learning, Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS) is also collaborating with the state government.
