UNSC Adopts Resolution on Afghanistan Under India’s Chair

United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the 15-Nation body has adopted a strong resolution on Afghanistan under India’s Presidency. China & Russia abstained from voting on the resolution. The resolution demands not to use Afghan territory to threaten or attack any country or to shelter or train terrorists, or to plan or to finance terrorist acts.

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has constituted a high-level group comprising External Affairs Minister (EAM) Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval & Other Senior officials to monitor the ground situation in Afghanistan with a focus on India’s Immediate priorities.

Navies of India & Algeria Conducts 1st ever ‘Maritime Partnership Exercise’ in Mediterranean Sea

The Indian Navy has conducted the 1st Ever Maritime Partnership Exercise with the Algerian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea on 29th August 2021. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, representing India, participated in the Exercise with a frontline Algerian Naval Ship (ANS) Ezzadjer, as a part of its goodwill Visit to Europe & Africa. It included diverse activities such as Co-ordinated manoeuvring, Communication procedures & Steam past between the two Navies. The exercise enabled the two navies to understand the concept of operations followed by each other, enhanced interoperability & increased interaction and collaboration between them in the future.

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar:
i.It is the 3rd Warship of the Talwar class frigate built for the Indian Navy in Russia. It is on a 4-month deployment (June to September 2021) across Europe & Africa.
ii.During this deployment, INS Tabar will make several port visits, Passage Exercise (PASSEX) & Bilateral exercises.

Carol Furtado appointed as Ujjivan SFB’s OSD

The board of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (SFB) appointed Carol Furtado as an ‘officer on special duty (OSD)’ till September 30, 2021. Then from October 1, 2021, she will take charge as the interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank, subject to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) approval. This decision has been taken after the resignation of the bank’s MD (Managing Director) and CEO Nitin Chugh last week. With this appointment, Carol Furtado resigned as the CEO of Ujjivan Financial Services.

RBI approved the Appointment of Sanjeeb Chaudhuri as Part-Time Chairman of IDFC FIRST Bank

The Reserve Bank of India(RBI) gave the approval to the appointment of Sanjeeb Chaudhuri as the part-time chairman of IDFC(Infrastructure Development Finance Company) FIRST Bank Limited.Meanwhile he would continue to hold the office of the director owing to SEBI (Security and Exchange Board of India) order or any such authority. Sanjeeb Chaudhuri is MBA graduate in marketing and he was under the list of top 25 Media Visionaries in Asia Pacific in 2016.

He has served as an independent Director and Audit, Nomination and Remuneration on CSR(Corporate Social Responsibility) member in Aditya Birla Group company. He was also a director and audit committee member at Standard Chartered Securities Limited,India. Presently, he is working as a Global Mentor at the Centre for Technology Management at Columbia Business, Newyork.

1st Ladakh Nomadic Festival Inaugurated at Korzok Phu by LG RK Mathur

Lieutenant Governor(LG) Radha Krishna (RK) Mathur inaugurated a 2 day ‘ Ladakh Nomadic Festival’ in the region of Changthang at Korzok Phu, Ladakh.The event was organised by Ladakh Cultural Academy in association with the Department of Tourism.
Aim – To promote tourism in the Changthang region of Ladakh.
Highlights: He admired the exquisite product – Pashmina,for which Changthang people are known around the world. LG also visited Korzyk monastery and geothermal project site at Puga.

India’s GM Iniyan Wins the 6th Noisiel International Chess Open, 2021

Indian GrandMaster (GM) Iniyan.P has won the 6th Noisiel International Chess Open, 2021. The tournament was held from 23rd to 28th August, 2021 in Noisiel, France. Iniyan scored a double triumph at 6th Noisiel International Open as he won both Classical and Blitz events. Iniyan scored an unbeaten 8 points from 9 rounds. He won a trophy and EUR 1200 as his prize for winning the Classical tournament.

Blitz event: He scored 7.5 points from 9 rounds. Two more players – GM Yuri Solodovnichenko (Ukraine) and GM Namig Guliyev (Azerbaijan) finished with the same score, however Iniyan had better tie-breaks, thus he won the championship. He received a trophy and EUR 250 for his efforts. He was born in September 2002 at Erode, Tamil Nadu. He is the 61st GM of India.

Formula One: Max Verstappen Wins Belgian Grand Prix, 2021

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (Netherland) has been declared the winner of the Belgian Grand Prix (GP), 2021. It was the Shortest ever Grand Prix in terms of distance Completed. The Belgian Grand Prix was held at the Circuit de Spa- Francorchamps, Belgium from August 27th-29th, 2021. Mercedes driver’s from Britain George Russell Williams & Lewis Hamilton finished in 2nd & 3rd place respectively. The F1 Championships are organised by Federation Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA)

Highlights of Belgian GP, 2021
i.It is the Shortest F1 Race ever in terms of distance completed, surpassing the race in Australia, 1991. Rain shortened the Belgian GP and Half points were awarded since 75% of the race distance was not completed.

ii.It was the 6th half-points race in F1 history, following Spain 1975 (accident), Austria 1975 (rain), Monaco 1984 (rain), Australia 1991 (rain) and Malaysia 2009 (rain).

Union Minister of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy (AYUSH), Sarbananda Sonowal has launched Mobile Appplication–Y Break App from Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi as part of week long activities & campaigns to commemorate ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ from August 30th to September 5th. The mobile application has been developed by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi.

Objective: A platform to make Yoga an integral part of people’s life at Workplace. A 5 minutes Yoga protocol for Office goers which includes Asanas, Pranayama & Dhyan. It will be helpful for all government & private employees to Refresh, reduce stress and refocus with enhanced immunity at their workplaces. Along with the app launch ,he also inaugurated the yearlong campaigns of cultivation of medicinal plants in farmland and distribution of medicinal plants to households, sensitisation of School and College going students on Ayush systems.

Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav
It is an initiative by the Government of India (GoI) to organise a series of events to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence. It will continue till 15th August, 2023. The Mahotsav will be celebrated as a Jan-Utsav in the spirit of Jan-Bhagidari.

SpaceX launched ants, avocados, robot to ISS

The SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft was launched from a recycled Falcon 9 rocket from the NASA’s (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida carrying shipment of ants, avocados and a human-sized robotic arm toward the International Space Station (ISS). After the launch, the rocket’s first-stage booster returned and landed upright on SpaceX’s newest ocean platform, named ‘A Shortfall of Gravitas’.This was SpaceX’s 23rd delivery towards the ISS in 10 years and 3rd launch for this particular booster.

What is the International Space Station (ISS)?
It is a home to astronauts in the form of large spacecraft which orbits around the earth. Its objective is to do research which could not be done on earth. It has science labs from the United States (NASA), Russia (Roscosmos), Japan (JAXA) and Europe (ESA). The first crew arrived on November 2, 2000. It is one of the brightest objects in the sky.

Kotak Mahindra Bank to Sell 20Cr Shares of APBL to Bharti Enterprises for Rs 294 Cr

Kotak Mahindra Bank is set to sell its 20 crore equity shares (around 8.57%) of Airtel Payment Bank Limited(APBL) to Bharti Enterprises Limited for a cash consideration of around Rs 294.8 crore. The Bharti Enterprises has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India to enable the execution of the proposed transaction. The proposed translation does not require any governmental or regulatory approvals.

PayU Acquired Billdesk for 4.7 Billion USD

PayU Payments Private Limited (PayU), a subsidiary of Prosus has entered into an agreement with the shareholders of Limited (BillDesk)to acquire 100% of its Equity shares for 4.7 Billion USD (around Rs 34 thousand Crores). Prosus NV is a global consumer internet group and technology investor. The acquisition is subject to approval from the Competition Commission of India(CCI). The purchase consideration is 4.7 billion USD on a cash-free, debt-free basis and subject to a normalised level of working capital at Closing.

Reason for acquisition:
The partnership between PayU and BillDesk will enable them to meet the payment needs of digital consumers, merchants and government enterprises in India and provide the state of the art technology to the excluded sections of the society.
Additional info:
i.According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s FY21 annual report, the number of transactions for digital retail payments has increased by more than 80% from 24 billion in 2018-2019 to 44 billion in 2020-21.
ii.RBI expects that more than 200 million new users will adopt digital payment in the next 3 years.

Pankaj Kumar Singh Appointed as New BSF Director General

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet(ACC) appointed Pankaj Kumar Singh as the Director General(DG) of Border Security Force(BSF).He will take charge after the retirement of Indo Tibetan Border Force (ITBP) DG Surjeet Singh(S S) Deswal, who is holding additional charge as DG of BSF after the tenure Rakesh Asthana.
About Pankaj Kumar Singh:
i.He is a Indian Police Service(IPS) Officer of 1988 batch from Rajasthan cadre. The office tenure will last till his superannuation on December 31,2021.
ii.He is presently serving as the special director general (DG) of the force that guards over 6,300 km of the Indian fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Other Appointments: Sanjay Arora, IPS officer of 1988 batch from Tamil Nadu cadre was appointed as the new Chief of ITBP(Indo Tibetan Border Force).He would succeed SS Deswal.
