India to be Guest of Honour Country at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) 2019

UAE selected India as the Guest of Honour country at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, ADIBF 2019, to attract a significant increase in the number of visitors with various events and activities.

The event will be held from 24th to 30th April 2019. The purpose of this 29th edition of the book fair is to highlight the UAE’s rich heritage, showcasing its authenticity, modernity, as well as its cultural and literary output.

India’s selection as the Guest of Honour will strengthen the relationship between India and UAE.

Apollo Hospitals launched an advanced centre for movement disorders

On World Parkinson’s Apollo Hospitals launched an advanced centre for movement disorders in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It will offer medical and surgical treatment for patients affected by various movement disorders including Parkinson’s Disease.

The centre would offer Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries and other services to treat a wide spectrum of diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, cerebral palsy, dystonia, essential tremor, and intractable spasticity dyskinesia.
Tremors, mainly on one side of the body, is the first manifestation of Parkinson’s disease. The initial management requires multidisciplinary care including physiotherapy, neurological support, psychiatric counselling, and nutrition. Surgery could be considered when the symptoms cannot be adequately controlled by medical management. The centre would offer DBS in which electrodes are implanted in the brain.

Jamia Millia Islamia gets its First Woman Vice-Chancellor

The Ministry of Human Resources and Development issued a statement about appointing Professor Najma Akhtar as vice–chancellor of Jamia Millia Islam about Professor Najma Akhtar as vice–chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) by the President of India.

  • She is appointed for a period of five years.
  • Professor Najma Akhtar will be the first woman to hold the post.
  • Professor Najma Akhtar is a gold medallist from Aligarh Muslim University.
  • She has a PhD in Education from Kurukshetra University.

India’s participation in the fair will attract a significant increase in the number of visitors with various events and activities which will be held throughout the entire duration of ADIBF.

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange arrested in London

The WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrested in London to face a charge in the United States of conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer network in 2010 bringing to an abrupt end a seven-year saga in which he had holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in Britain to avoid capture.  The Ecuadorean government suspended the citizenship it had granted Mr Assange and evicted him clearing the way for his arrest. Mr Assange indicated that he would fight extradition, and legal experts stated process could take years. Mr Assange’s arrest brought to head long-simmering tensions that have raised profound First Amendment press freedom issues.  The internal government debate over whether to charge Mr Assange continued under the Trump administration and was accelerated by Jeff Sessions, the attorney general at the time, according to former officials involved in the discussions.

Nepal sends team to remeasure height of Mount Everest

Nepal sent a team of experts to remeasure the height of Mount Everest. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli bid adieu tofourmemberr team of the Survey Department in Kathmandu yesterday.  Chief Survey Officer Khim Lal Gautam and Survey Officer Rabin Karki will ascend Mount Everest. After reaching the summit they will use a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) that will send readings about its height to their two colleagues who will remain at base camp.  The Survey Department will be conducted four sets of surveys: Precise levelling, Trigonometric levelling, Gravity survey and GNSS survey. Nepal government aims to measure the exact height of Mount Everest amid debates that there might have been a change in its height due to various reasons including the devastating earthquake of 2015.  It is for the first time, Nepal sent its own team to conduct a survey of the world’s highest mountain.

i. Sakshi and Pwilao Basumatary clinched Silver medals

  • 18- year old Sakshi Choudhary come up with silver medal under 57 kg category after getting defeated by two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist Michaela Walsh. The Irish stamped her authority in a commanding 5-0 performance.
  • Pwilao Basumatary, India Open gold medallist came up with silver medal under 64 kg category after getting short against China’s Chengyu Yang, who was declared the winner on points.

ii. Pinki Rani and Parveen clinched Bronze medals

  • Pinki Rani settled for bronze medal under 51 kg category after getting defeated the hands of Ireland’s 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Carly McNaul.
  • Praveen clinched Bronze medal under 60 kg category after getting defeated by English pugilist Paige Murney.

iii. Indian pugilists finish with 5 medals
India has finished a haul of five medals from this prestigious European tournament of Cologne Boxing World Cup 2019 by clinching Pinki Rani (51kg) and Parveen (60kg)’s bronze medal wins, Sakshi and Pwilao Basumatary’s sliver medal wins and Meena Kumari’s gold medal.

British racing driver, Lewis Hamilton has achieved his 75th career victory in Formula One’s 1000th race at the Chinese Grand Prix on 14th April, 2019. He has delivered a crushing performance to win this title.

His Mercedes came up with a 1-2 finish.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes has achieved Chinese Grand Prix by defeating Valtteri Bottas, his teammate and pole sitter with a quic start from his No. 2 spot on the grid.



RBI grants 12 years to LIC for reducing stake in IDBI Bank

Life Insurance Corporation(LIC), the largest insurance company in India, got 12 years from RBI for cut down stake in IDBI Bank.LIC is the lender’s major shareholder, and it has a 51 per cent stake in the Bank. It means that no obligation to sell its stake in the following years or would probably spend higher money to keep its stake in any future fund raising by the bank.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) claimed that LIC can take up to 15 percent stake in any bank,which can stretch up to 30 percent as per the board approval.But the insurance regulator has authorised LIC to hold up to 51 percent in IDBI Bank in 2018.

After 12 years LIC has to decrease stake in IDBI Bank by 10 per cent to 40 per cent.

RBI Permitted Reinsurance Brokers to Open Foreign Currency Accounts 

The Reserve Bank of India sanctioned reinsurance brokers to initiate non-interest bearing foreign currency accounts with banks for undertaking transactions. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) had issued notification and following this  the RBI declared Foreign Exchange Management (Foreign Currency Accounts by a resident person in India) Regulations, 2015 – Opening of Foreign Currency Accounts by Re-insurance and Composite Insurance brokers.

For undertaking transactions in the ordinary course of their business, reinsurance and composite insurance brokers enrolled with IRDAI may start and manage non-interest bearing foreign currency accounts with a bank in India.

Foreign currency account refers to a bank account operated in currency other than the currency of India or Bhutan or Nepal.

MoU signed by Tata Trusts and Microsoft India for jointly collaborating handloom clusters in India’s eastern and north-eastern parts

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Tata Trusts and Microsoft India for jointly rejuvenating the handloom clusters in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India in order to build a digitally-inclusive society.
Project ‘ReWeave’:
’s Project ‘ReWeave’ will help to preserve traditional weaving forms by upskilling workers, designing and marketing products, and creating sustainable livelihood options.

i. Project ReWeave already implemented successfully new e-commerce platforms, digital empowerment centres and the new design curriculum to Telangana weaving clusters of Rajouli, Chottuppal and a few other clusters.
ii. Microsoft will also enable digital training through a Microsoft Azure-based Learning Management Systemtermed as ‘Project Sangam’, which provides necessary training and tools to weaving communities for them to adopt and deploy digital tools for the betterment of their craftwork.
Antaran initiative:
Tata Trusts’ initiative, Antaran’s main objective is to rejuvenate ailing handloom clusters through an end-to-end programme that would help artisans to become designers and entrepreneurs.
Extensive work by the Trust has already been started at Odisha, Assam and Nagaland.

Odisha’s Dr BK Nayak first Indian FIH health & safety committee head

Col(Dr)Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, a native of the temple City, became the first Indian to be appointed Chair of International Hockey Federation (FIH) Health and Safety Committee by the world governing body, Hockey India (HI). He will serve a two-year cycle lasting until 2020.

Dr.Nayak first Indian to have been nominated by FIH as the Medical Officer for a World Cup.

From National Institute of Sports Medicine at Havana, Cuba & National Sports Centre at Madrid, Spain, he has tutored in Sports Traumatology and Sports & Exercise Physiology.

He had worked as the Medical Officer for the 2018 Men’s World Cup and chief team physician of Indian Contingent in Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

In 1995, he was appointed in the Army Medical Corps of Indian Army and worked the Army Sports Institute, Pune.

Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtayeh sworn as New Palestinian government

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the oath of office from the new 24-membercabinet headed by Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtayeh.

Mohammed Ishtayeh is a veteran peace negotiator and harsh critic of Gaza’s Hamas rulers.

This move will deepen the rift between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, the Islamic militant group that governs the Gaza Strip.


World’s largest airplane made its first test flight over California

The world’s largest airplane a Stratolaunch behemoth has made its first test flight in California.

It has two fuselages and six Boeing 747 engines and is designed to carry into space, and drop a rocket that would in turn ignite to deploy satellites.

An engineering company named ‘Scaled Composites’ built this airplane and was financed by Paul Allen who was the co-founder of Microsoft.

Research study published in: ‘Microbiome’ states that unique oil-eating bacteria found in Mariana Trench 

In the deepest part of the Western Pacific Ocean, deep in the Mariana Trench (under approximately 36,089 feet i.e 11,000 metres), scientists have discovered a unique oil-eating bacteria that can help in sustainable ways of cleaning up man-made oil spills. The research has been published in the journal ‘Microbiome‘.

The research study was led by Xiao-Hua Zhang of the Ocean University, China. Zhang and his team collected samples of the microbes, studied them and identified a new group of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria.

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds that are made of hydrogen and carbon atoms, and are found mostly in crude oil and natural gas.

Airtel FICCI Ladies Organisation launch women’s safety app

Bharti Airtel has launched a mobile app, “My Circle” in collaboration with FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) to assist women in case they face any panic situation or problem.

The application will allow women to send SOS alerts to any five of their family or friends in 13 languages.

A woman can send an SOS alert by pressing the SOS prompt on the app.
